History of Jil Sander

The founder of the company is Jil Sander, whose real name is Heidelij Irene Zander.
Jil Sander’s career as a designer was not as smooth sailing as her success in the following years.
From the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, when she started designing, the mainstream was so-called “generous, colorful and flamboyant” clothing.
It was not until the 90’s that the refined, delicate, and quality-conscious minimalist designs that were the hallmark of her designs were truly recognized.
She made her debut in the Paris Prêt-à-Porter collection in 1973.
The brand withdrew from Paris in 1980.
In 1985, he moved his activities to Milan, where he participated in the Milan Collections in 1987.
In 1989, Jil Sander was listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange in Germany, which enabled the company to expand its business overseas on a large scale.
In 1999, the Prada Group acquired a 75% stake in Jil Sander at the height of the brand’s success, and he resigned as designer at the end of Fall/Winter 2000, citing disagreements with the brand group’s general manager.
Since 2005, Raf Simons has been the creative director of Jil Sander’s menswear and womenswear, but Raf Simons stepped down as creative director after the 2012-13 fall/winter collection.
In 2017, Lucy and Luke Mayer were appointed as Creative Directors.
A new line, Jil Sander+ (Jil Sander+), was launched for the Fall/Winter 2019-20 season.
Today, Jil Sander’s simple and sophisticated designs continue to be well received.
