BREITLING — Instruments for the Cockpit, Watches for the Wrist

Guided by the idea that its watches are instruments for professionals, BREITLING has walked alongside
aviation for well over a century.
The Swiss brand is known for functional chronographs, not least the Navitimer with its circular slide
rule.
Here we introduce the appeal of BREITLING.

What is BREITLING?

BREITLING is a Swiss watch brand founded in 1884.

Long before the war it was closely tied to aviation, producing cockpit clocks and stopwatches. Working from
the conviction that it builds instruments rather than mere watches, the brand has pushed legibility and
handling to the forefront of its chronographs.

Its collections each have a character of their own — Navitimer, Chronomat, Superocean, Premier and more —
built around sustainable manufacturing and a luxury that stays refined yet approachable.

History of BREITLING

It began in 1884, when Leon Breitling opened a watch workshop in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The company moved
to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892 and built its name as a specialist in chronographs and stopwatches.

In 1952 it introduced the Navitimer, whose circular slide-rule bezel let pilots handle their in-flight
calculations on the wrist. A jointly developed automatic chronograph, the Calibre 11, followed in 1969, and
the Chronomat arrived in 1984 for the brand’s centenary. In 2009 Breitling presented Calibre 01, its first
entirely in-house movement.
